Coronavirus Update – Schools hosting community playgroup sessions on site
Dear Principal
In light of the Coronavirus pandemic, I am writing to advise that Playgroup WA has recommended to member community playgroups that they consider suspending meeting for the time being. This recommendation is made with due consideration to the public health messages related to social distancing and avoiding non-essential gatherings. This advice will impact the playgroup meeting on your school site. We have advised the Department of Education of our recommendation to playgroups on school sites.
While community playgroups are independent entities and not required to accept our advice, some made the decision last week to put face to face sessions on hold and some schools have already asked school- based playgroups to go into recess.
Playgroups provide vital play opportunities for children’s development and wellbeing, significant social and emotional support for parents/caregivers, as well as promoting civic participation and development. These functions of playgroup are even more critical in times of prolonged stress or crisis. As such Playgroup WA staff will continue to work with playgroup families, exploring ways for families to stay connected and supported during this time while group meetings are in recess. We will also be providing ongoing play ideas using available resources within the home.
Your support of playgroup is valued and appreciated. We look forward to continuing to work with you in reinvigorating school-based playgroups later in the year.
